Kerry meets Jonathan, Buhari in Lagos, canvasses violence-free presidential poll

John Kerry, the United States secretary of state, has held separate meetings with President Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kerry arrived Lagos board a US presidential jet at about 1 pm. Journalists were restricted from gaining access to the VIP wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport for the official coverage of his arrival.

While the meeting with Jonathan took place at the state house in Marina, that of Buhari held in Ikoyi.

John Oyegun, chairman of APC; Bola Tinubu, national leader of APC; Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers state and some other stalwarts of the opposition party also attended Kerry’s meeting with Buhari.

Details of the meeting are still sketchy but the US diplomatic mission to Nigeria quoted Kerry as saying his visit was to emphasise the importance of ensuring the upcoming elections are peaceful, nonviolent, and credible.

The visit, which comes less than three weeks to the general election, is his first to Nigeria.
