Former Black Stars of Ghana midfielder, Kevin-Prince Boateng, and teammate Sidney Sam has been suspended indefinitely by Schalke 04 following Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Cologne in the Bundesliga.
Boateng, 28, played 59 minutes of the match while Germany winger Sam, 27, was absent.
The club, managed by former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, blamed a “lack of mutual trust” and told both players they can find new clubs.
“Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt announced there would be consequences after Sunday’s defeat away to Cologne and the first action taken has been: Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam have been suspended with immediate effect,” a club statement read.
“Marco Hoger is suspended from training and first-team action up to and including Saturday, 16 May.”
Boateng joined the Gelsenkirchen club from AC Milan for 15m Euros in August 2013 and still had more than a year to run on his contract.
The player, though, is used to this kind of situation as he was sacked from Ghana’s World Cup team in Brazil ten months ago.
He was accused of verbally attacking former coach Kwesi Appiah, forcing the Ghana FA to throw him out of the team’s camp.
Schalke are sixth on the log – the final Europa League qualifying spot – with two games left. They are two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen and four ahead of Hoffenheim.
