Kidnapped Kaduna Anglican priest dies in captivity

Edwin Achi

The Kaduna Anglican Communion Diocese has announced the death of Edwin Achi, priest of Ebenezer church, in Ungwan Maijero, Chikun LGA.

Achi was abducted by bandits over a month ago.

The priest, who hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani LGA of Delta, was kidnapped alongside his wife, Sarah Achi — a customs officer — and their daughter on the night of October 28, 2025, after armed assailants invaded their residence in Nissi community, near the Kaduna refinery.

Days after the abduction, the kidnappers reached out to the family, demanding a ransom.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, the diocese confirmed Achi’s passing, describing it as “a painful loss to the entire diocese, the clergy, the church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion to the service of God”.

“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing onto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi,” the statement reads.

“Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead.”

The church announced the suspension of its annual ‘Stand Up for Jesus 2025’ event in honour of the late cleric and appealed for prayers for the safe return of Achi’s wife and daughter, who remain in captivity.

The news comes amid heightened concerns over banditry and kidnappings in Nigeria, with citizens calling for urgent federal intervention to curb the menace.
