President Muhammadu Buhari has charged security agencies to always stay ahead of criminals and bandits.

Buhari gave the charge on Monday on the heels of various killings recently recorded in the country.

The president said part of the resolutions from the security meeting held earlier in the day was that the law enforcement agencies will also take intelligence-gathering more serious.

“All our law enforcement agencies must take intelligence-gathering and sharing much more seriously,” Buhari said via his twitter handle.

“The police and Department of State Services especially have been charged to step up their efforts and capacity in this regard.

“Our law enforcement agencies must at all times stay ahead of bandits and criminals, wherever they are across the country, by efficiently gathering, sharing and acting on credible Intelligence. We will give them all the support needed to succeed.”

The president said all persons arrested so far, including those arrested for illegally possessing arms, “will be duly prosecuted”.

“I urge judicial officers to be alive to responsibilities in this regard, to enable the speedy dispensation of justice,” he added.

Recent clashes between herdsmen and farmers have led to numerous killings in the country.

At least 100 persons were killed in separate attacks by suspected herdsmen in some communities in Benue and Taraba states earlier in January.

There have also been various pockets of attacks and clashes between the two groups since then.
