At least 114 inmates who escaped from from Kabba Correctional Centre in Kogi state have been re-arrested.

Gunmen attacked Kabba Correctional Centre in the early hours of Monday, freeing 240 inmates and killing two security operatives.

The custodial facility was said to have had 294 inmates as of the time of attack.

Sesan Nihi, Kogi correctional service spokesman, confirmed the number of re-arrests to TheCable via phone call.

“We have about 114 inmates back now. Some of the inmates returned themselves but I cannot give a definite figure for that. In fact, two just returned not too long ago. Some of the inmates were brought back by their parents,” he said.

“We have a search party with other security agencies to capture the remaining inmates.”

Rauf Aregbesola, minister of interior, had said a special taskforce had been “activated” to recapture inmates who fled from centre.

The interior minister said INTERPOL has been put on notice to look out for any of the inmates who may attempt to flee the country.

Sources told TheCable that a security report had warned of the possibility of coordinated attacks in Kogi state.

The incident is one of the recent jailbreaks in the country.

On April 5, gunmen raided Owerri prisons in Imo state, freeing more than 1,800 inmates.
