Kwankwaso: Kano rerun will determine INEC’s credibility

March 19
12:46 2019

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state, says Saturday supplementary election in Kano will determine the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Kwankwaso spoke during an interview with BBC Hausa service, monitored by NAN.

“INEC’s credibility or otherwise will be assessed by the way and manner it will conduct the Kano state re-run election come March 23,” Kwankwaso was quoted to have said.

The re-run elections will hold in 234 polling units in more than 88 registration wards of 30 local government areas in the state.

INEC had declared the governorship election inconclusive.

Bello Shehu, the returning officer, based the action on the margin between the two leading candidates and the cancelled votes in the election.

Shehu said a winner could not be declared since the number of cancelled votes was higher than the figure between Abba Yusuf, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yusuf polled a total of 1,014,353 votes ahead of Ganduje who secured 953,522 votes, leaving a margin of 26,655 votes.

A total of 100,873 votes were cancelled in the election.
