The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it is on high alert as Cameroun is set to open the flood gates of Lagdo Dam on the Benue River.
In a statement on Monday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA permanent secretary, said the agency is fully prepared with improved infrastructures to manage any challenges that may arise owing to the opening of the dam.
“In line with the paradigm shift from response to effective and efficient disaster management, preparedness, and prevention, the state has carried out holistic measures,” he said.
“These holistic measures include the sensitisation and advocacy in historically affected areas and empowerment of local emergency management committees.
“This also includes strengthening the early warning systems and clearing of drainage and gutters at the state and local government area levels.
Oke-Osanyintolu appealed to residents to remain calm.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) recently said 19 states and 56 communities across the country are likely to witness heavy rainfall in the month of August.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had earlier said 178 LGAs in 32 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) had been predicted to experience severe flooding this year.
