Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has approved an “end-of-the-year bonus” for street sweepers working for the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

In a statement, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director and CEO of LAWMA, said the bonus is an appreciation from the government to the workers for their tireless commitment to making the state clean.

“Gov. Sanwo-Olu acknowledges the tireless efforts of our street sweepers and waste handlers in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for Lagosians,” he said.

“This bonus is a gesture of gratitude for their dedication and commitment, especially during this festive season,” he said.

“The bonus would impact the lives of the recipients and their families, bringing joy and relief during the season.

“The news was met with jubilation among the sanitation workforce, as they expressed appreciation for the governor’s gesture.”

Gbadegesin added that the agency would continue to consolidate efforts to make all parts of the state clean in 2024.

Meanwhile, in 2020, LAWMA alleged that some contractors were involved in sharp practices of paying sweepers less than the amount approved by the state government.

Ibrahim Odumboni, the acting manager of the agency at the time, said the “government approved N25,000 for each sweeper in the state, but the contractors shortchanged them and paid as low as N5,000″.
