The Lagos house of assembly on Thursday passed the bill on the prohibition of open grazing in the state.

The assembly also passed the bill on value added tax (VAT) during the plenary session.

The two bills were passed after unanimous votes by the lawmakers.

Subsequently, Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker, directed Olalekan Onafeko, the acting clerk, to transmit copies of the bills to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor, for assent.

The speaker commended his colleagues for their passion to ensure the advancement of the state.

“I thank you all for this historic exercise,” Obasa said.

TheCable had reported that the bills scaled second reading on Monday.

The house had subsequently held two separate public hearings on the bills on Wednesday, with different groups invited to air their views.

The south-west chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association(MACBAN) had said it needs time to train its members on how to stop the practice of open grazing.

Maikudi Usman, zonal secretary of south-west MACBAN, made the plea at the public hearing of the anti-open grazing bill.

He said the members of the association need time to be educated on “how they will be breeding cattle in one place and not transfer to anybody’s land”.

We’ve been talking about ending open grazing for a long time. Only now does MACBAN realize they need to train their members not to graze cattle on another’s land?
