Lagos bans workers from sleeping in construction sites overnight

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has banned workers from sleeping overnight in construction sites.

Gbolahan Oki, general manager of LASBCA, said the directive is to safeguard the building construction industry.

In a statement on Friday, Olaoye Olusegun, LASBCA spokesperson, said agency officials will start inspecting construction sites across the state at night.

The general manager was quoted as saying construction time in the state is from 7am to 7pm between Monday and Saturday.

He said property developers who engage workers for construction activities outside the stipulated time will have their buildings sealed.

He urged property owners and developers to always employ professionals like architects and civil engineers to handle construction activities.

He warned that henceforth, building sites without professionals will be sealed and removed.

The general manager said all buildings under construction in the last seven months must be re-certified by the agency to ascertain their structural stability.

He appealed to property owners who do not have valid planning permits to regularise them.

On Thursday, four construction workers died inside a two-storey building that collapsed at Arowojobe estate, Maryland, Lagos.

The building was said to have collapsed around 3am on Thursday.
