Lagos councillor Oluwakemi Rufai dies two weeks after taking office

Oluwakemi Rufai, the councillor representing ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Lagos, has died just two weeks after her election.

Rufai, the only female councillor recently sworn into the Ibeju-Lekki legislative council, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday after a brief illness.

In a statement issued to mourn her passing, Seye Oladejo, spokesperson for the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC), described Rufai as a “rising star who embodied commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion.”

Oladejo said the late councillor was dedicated to community development, with an unwavering loyalty to the ideals of the APC, which he noted were evident even in her brief time in office.

“We are heartbroken by this loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to her immediate family, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, her constituents in Ward C1, and all who had the privilege of working with her. Her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten,” the statement reads.

“The Lagos APC stands in solidarity with the community she served and remains committed to upholding the values she so strongly believed in.”
