Lagos fire service reports 1,072 incidents, 62 deaths, N10.7bn property loss in six months

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) says it responded to 1,072 emergency incidents, rescued 252 persons, with 62 fatalities from January to June 2025.

In a statement on Monday, Maria Fadairo, LSFRS senior public affairs officer, said there were 922 fire outbreaks, 73 rescue operations, with 65 salvage-related emergencies during the period.

Fadairo said the service also responded to 10 building collapse incidents, eight of which were partial and two minor explosions.

“These incidents comprised 922 fire calls, 2 minor explosion incidents, 10 building collapses- eight of it were partial, 73 rescue operations, and 65 salvage incidents. The report also noted staggering 315 false emergency calls, emphasising the persistent challenge posed by non-genuine emergencies,” the statement reads.

Margaret Adeseye, director of the fire service, said the service’s swift response helped prevent greater disaster across the state.

Adeseye noted that the agency saved property worth N64.32 billion, while about  N10.72 billion worth of property was lost during the period.

She said the figures reflect the agency’s role in protecting lives and property, adding that the service continues to engage stakeholders to reduce the prevalence of fire outbreaks.

Adeseye added that the agency will deepen collaboration at the upcoming international fire safety conference 2.0, where stakeholders will explore strategies for improved emergency preparedness.
