Lagos: Inner street gates in Lekki removed in residents’ interest

Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for environment and water resources in Lagos, says removing inner street gates in some parts of the state was in the interest of residents.

On December 21, the state government ordered the removal of permanently closed inner street gates in the Lekki area of Lagos.

Kunle Adeshina, spokesperson of the ministry of environment, had said the decision was to “rescue several residents of the state, especially in the Lekki 1 axis, who are suffering untold hardship of inaccessibility by removing permanently closed inner roads gates.”

While speaking at a meeting organised by Oluwaseun Oshiyemi, Lagos state commissioner for transportation,  on Tuesday, Wahab said the decision was “regrettable” but had to be taken to regulate operations at Lekki phase 1, a government scheme.

He assured that all the gates removed are in good condition and would be returned once an agreement is reached on modalities for re-installment.

The commissioner added that part of the agreement is that the gates cannot be shut before midnight and must be manned by security personnel, to ensure hitch-free entry and exit for all residents.
