The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has launched an initiative tagged Sports Talents & Athletes Redefining Success (STARS) to recognise and honour outstanding talent in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, LSSC says the programme will encompass “a range of recognition and support mechanisms, including celebration of athletes across diverse sports disciplines”.

The commission added that the initiative will also “recognise the indispensable role played by coaches, trainers, administrators, and other stakeholders in contributing to the success of athletes and talents” and appreciate their contributions to the state’s sporting ecosystem.

STARS will also prioritise discovering and developing promising sports talents to help them realise their full potential.

Lekan Fatodu, director-general of LSSC, said the programme will “shine a spotlight” on athletes and stakeholders “who are redefining success, pushing boundaries”, and bringing success to the state.

“Lagos STARS underscores the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu towards enhancing sporting excellence in the state,” the director-general said.

“This initiative will shine a spotlight on individuals and teams who are redefining success, pushing boundaries, inspiring others, and bringing pride to Lagos state through their sports achievements.”

On his part, Ola Okunnu, director of LSSC’s technical department, said the initiative will help the state achieve “greater sporting success on the national and international stage”.

Lagos STARS is also expected to provide mentorship, training, and resource allocation to empower athletes and talents to reach their full potential.
