The magistrate’s court in Ebute-Meta area of Lagos has remanded Samsideen Oladiti, an official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), over alleged murder of a tricyclist identified as Imam Ramon.
Videos showing the alleged assault on the victims appeared on social media in August.
The death of the tricyclist sparked a protest at the Oladiti’s office in Sandgrouse market, where sympathisers set two motorcycles ablaze.
On September 19, operatives of the Lagos police command arrested the NURTW official over the alleged assault and murder.

The police filed a three-count charge bordering on assault and murder against Oladiti, popularly known as ‘Shamelon’.
Anthony Iyeye, the police prosecutor, told the court on Tuesday that on August 27, the NURTW official allegedly assaulted Ramon at Lewis street on Lagos Island.
The police prosecutor said the injuries inflicted on the tricyclist led to his death at the Lagos Island General Hospital in Marina.

Iyeye alleged that Oladiti also assaulted Omale Samuel, a dispatch rider, on September 27, and inflicted injuries on the victim.
The police prosecutor said Samuel was taken the hospital for medical treatment after the assault.
The NURTW official did not take his plea after the charges were read.
A. O. Akinde, the magistrate, ordered that Oladiti be remanded at the Ikoyi correctional centre pending further advice from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)
