The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos says it will adopt consensus candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the forthcoming LG election.

The party has scheduled its primaries for May 17 across all council areas in the state.

Speaking with NAN on Tuesday, Hakeem Olalemi, PDP vice chairman (central), said the process will be based on agreement among stakeholders in each area.

He said the PDP is confident of its chances in the July 12 LGA election in Lagos.

“Our great party, PDP, will be holding its primaries for the forthcoming Local Government election in Lagos State at the various local government secretariats of our party on Saturday, May 17,” he said.

“We are very sure that our chances are very bright in the next local government election. We are sure of our chances and hope the election will be credible.”

Olalemi acknowledged the influence of the ruling party on the state electoral commission, but expressed readiness to compete.

“We know that the ruling party dictates to the state electoral commission, but we will be on the field with the APC and square it up with them. By the Grace of God, we shall win. We are ready for the election physically, morally and otherwise,” he said.

Phillips Aivoji, the Lagos state PDP chairman, also expressed optimism about the party’s prospects.

“We are participating to win. We will continue to mobilise for the support of the people, to vote for PDP,” he said.

“I believe that PDP chances are bright in some areas, while we will slug it out in some other council.

“Lagos residents stand to gain a lot with PDP. They stand to gain good governance. They stand to gain purposeful and meaningful administration. The people will be number one in everything we do if PDP is voted.”

Last Saturday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) elected candidates that will contest in the LG election in July.
