The Lagos government has sealed off Alaba international market in the Ojo LGA over poor environmental practices.

Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos commissioner for environment and water resources, announced the closure of the popular market on Monday.

“Alaba International Market, Ojo has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences,” Wahab wrote on his X page.

The development comes as Lagos ramps up the sealing of markets in the state over environmental infractions.

The government recently reopened Ladipo, Alamutu, Ile-Epo and some other markets shuttered over reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises and non-payment of waste dues.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, managing director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), had said markets must comply with certain environmental conditions like provision of waste points and commitment to sustainable waste policing.

In July, Lagos announced the demolition of distressed buildings in Alaba market to ensure safety of traders.
