Lagos to enforce jail term, N250k fine for illegal waste disposal

Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for the environment and water resources in Lagos, says the state will impose a fine of ₦250,000 or a three-month jail term on individuals who dump refuse illegally, litter or deface the streets.

In an X post on Wednesday, Wahab said the state will no longer tolerate any deliberate environmental abuse.

The commissioner noted that Lagos has arrested over 3,000 environmental offenders so far and will intensify its surveillance and public awareness efforts.

“During Lagos state ministry of the environment and water resources media briefing yesterday, we made it clear that Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse,” the post reads.

He said the state will commence full enforcement of the ban on single use plastics (SUPs) from July 1.

Tokunbo, who urged residents to dispose their wastes appropriately, noted that the bans on cart pushing, public defecation, and illegal street trading in the state remain in effect.

“From July 1, full enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics begins. Offenders who dump refuse illegally, litter the streets, or deface our environment will face stiff penalties, up to ₦250,000 fine or 3 months in jail,” Tokunbo said.

“We have arrested over 3,000 offenders and counting, and we’re ramping up surveillance and advocacy.

“The law on cart pushers still stands, public defecation remains banned, and illegal street trading will not be tolerated. This is about saving our environment; for us and the generations to come.”
