The Lagos police command on Sunday said it arrested some Yoruba nation agitators in Alausa.

Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police spokesperson, in a statement, said the agitators had set up a camp at the area and were planning to start a protest before their arrest.

Hundeyin said the protest could degenerate into a violation of rights and destruction of property.

“A number of Yoruba nation agitators commenced setting up camp at Alausa, planned to be used as a base to launch a massive protest,” the statement reads.

“Camp was promptly dislodged while agitators were arrested. Investigation continues at the state criminal investigation department (SCID). Lawlessness will not be tolerated!

“Protests that started with this format, in Lagos, always snowballed into infringement of the rights of others, destruction of property & difficult-to-manage situations.

“At Lagos state police command, we put crime statistics to use.”

Last month, TheCable reported that a rally organised by Yoruba nation agitators at the Gani Fawehinmi park in Ojota turned violent.

The rally was to demand what they described as a “separate nation for the Yoruba people of Nigeria”.

But police dispersed members of the movement with teargas canisters after which the rally became violent.

Two agitators were alleged to have been killed by policemen, while two policemen were also shot.
