The Plateau house of assembly has asked the state emergency management agency (SEMA) to assist victims of the recent rainstorm in some parts of Pankshin LGA of the state.

NAN reports that Gabriel Dewan, a member representing Pankshin north, moved the motion as a matter of urgent public importance at plenary on Tuesday.

Dewan said the rainstorm destroyed many houses, classrooms including marketplaces in the community.

Moses Sule, speaker of the house, urged SEMA to intervene in the situation by visiting the affected areas.

“SEMA’s intervention is needed to ameliorate the sufferings of the affected people, especially the students in order not to jeopardize their educational pursuits,” he said.

During the plenary, the lawmakers also considered two bills seeking to establish the Plateau law reform commission and other matters related, and the bill for a law to establish the state citizens’ mediation centre.

Gwattson Fom, the deputy speaker of the assembly, said the bills will help to resolve the land disputes among citizens.

“Disagreements such as land disputes, royalty disputes, disputes between landlord and tenants, among other domestic or internal disputes in the state can be addressed at the centre with ease,” Fom said.

The house constituted a committee to be headed by the deputy speaker and ordered the delegation to submit its reports on the bills in two weeks.
