Sommie Maduagwu
Pelumi Olajengbesi, a human rights lawyer, has called on the police to promptly prosecute the 12 suspects arrested in connection with the killing of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, the Arise TV news anchor.
On September 29, about 15 armed men invaded Unique Apartments, a 16-flat four-storey building in the Katampe area of the city.
The armed robbery incident led to the death of Somtochukwu, popularly known as Sommie, and the security guard of the building.
In a statement on Thursday, following the police announcement of the arrests, Olajengbesi commended the force for the swift action.

“The police should not stop at the arrest of the suspects involved in the death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu but must pursue diligent prosecution,” he said.
Olajengbesi noted that the suspects have confessed to the crime and warned against any further delays or extended investigations.
“The death of the Arise TV reporter is tragic and very painful on its own. Delaying the prosecution of the suspects is more painful and dishonourable to the family of the victim,” he added.

The lawyer said swift prosecution would serve as a deterrent to criminals and send a strong message that such crimes will not go unpunished.
