While students of the University of Lagos and University of Port Harcourt are still grappling with the realities of being away from school under controversial circumstances, the University of Ibadan (UI) has taken after the duo.

The school was down indefinitely on Tuesday after the students protested the lack of basic amenities on campus and demanded the reinstatement of Tunji Ekpeti Micheal, a 500 level student of the university who was rusticated for a semester.

In a Facebook post on the Student Union page of the university, Tunji Oladejo, the public relations officer of the university, said the student was rusticated after he was found guilty of leading a protest in respect of electricity failure on November 19, 2015.

A statement signed by Olukoya O. I., the registrar of the institution, announced the closure of the school and advised students to vacate the halls of residence before 4.00pm.

It said students of the university were joined in the protest by “persons who claimed to be members of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West zone from Ladoke Akintola university of Technology, Ogbomoso, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, The Polytechnic, Ibadan”.

Several students from other tertiary institutions of knowledge like Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Federal school of Statistics, Ibadan and Federal Cooperative College, Eleyele were also part of the protest.

The protesters were accused of disrupting the peace on campus and vandalising some parts of the university.

Earlier this month, students of the University of Lagos protested the water scarcity and blackout on the campus and this resulted in the suspension of academic activities on campus.

Students of the University of Port Harcourt also protested the tuition hike and the management shut down the university indefinitely.
