Semi Ajayi, Super Eagles of Nigeria defender, scored a late equaliser for West Bromwich Albion to rescue a point against Liverpool in the English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Anfield on Sunday.

The 27-year-old scored an 82nd-minute header to end Liverpool’s winning run at home this season, while West Brom earned only their second point in five league matches.

The former Rotherham United defender, who was stellar at the back despite West Brom conceding an early goal, handed Sam Allardyce, the club’s new manager, his first point since being appointed to lead the Midland club’s relegation survival battle.

Jurgen Klopp’s men took the lead on 12 minutes when Sadio Mane, Senegalese international striker, controlled Joel Matip’s deep ball before dispatching into the corner for a goal.

Liverpool continued to dominate in the one-way traffic while West Brom were set up by Allardyce to stop the home side from doing more damage.

The second period continued like the first but West Brom fashioned unorthodox chances and were rewarded with a smash-and-grab opportunity eight minutes before the end when the Baggies won a corner kick following a Liverpool mistake.

Ajayi rose highest to plant a header that bounced off the inside of the right post before nestling in the far corner beyond Alisson Becker, Liverpool goalkeeper.

The draw prevented Liverpool from going five points clear at the summit of the EPL while West Brom earned a point that brings their tally to eight points — five points away from leaving a relegation place.

Ajayi has featured in 13 of West Brom’s 15 league games this season, playing ninety minutes in all appearances.
