Liverpool and Chelsea have claimed the third and fourth positions respectively in the English Premier League (EPL) on the final day of the season while Leicester ended the campaign out of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) spot.

The Reds defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 to complete an improbable surge to a UCL spot while Chelsea wriggled despite losing 1-2 at Aston Villa.

It is the second straight season Leicester City have lost a UCL spot after a poor run of form towards the end of the league campaign.

They spent over 250 days in the top four this season before dropping out on the final day of the season.

Jamie Vardy’s double penalties gave the former EPL champions the lead but Harry Kane and a Kasper Schmeichel own goal leveled for Spurs on both occasions before a Gareth Bale double sealed an unlikely victory for the visitors.

Liverpool were 10 points off a UCL position last month but they amassed eight wins in a ten-match unbeaten run. One goal in each half from Sadio Mane ensured a fairytale end to an injury-plagued season for the Anfield club.

The Senegalese forward stabbed home the first and thumped in a shot for the second to seal a season-defining victory.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ended the season with 69 points, two more than Chelsea who claimed the fourth position while Leicester secured the fifth spot.
