A faction of the Labour Party (LP) has asked the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to cancel the recently-conducted LGA election and conduct a fresh one that will “reflect the genuine will of the people”.
LASIEC conducted the poll on Saturday, with the APC winning all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 of the 376 councillorship positions.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ken Asogwa, spokesperson to Nenadi Usman, acting national chair of a faction of the party, said what happened on Saturday was a “mockery of an election”.
The party further described the LGA election as a “sham and a clear red flag”, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining democratic principles.

The LP said the process was a “troubling sign of what the 2027 general election could look like.”
Asogwa said the outcome of the election should concern Nigerians who value democracy, describing it as “unprecedented in Nigeria’s electoral history”.
He alleged that the APC used the exercise to showcase its “disregard for due process”, allegedly aided by electoral officials.

“The farce that played out in Lagos state on Saturday, July 12, 2025, under the guise of local government elections, has once again exposed the APC as a party allergic to democratic principles and due process,” he said.
“The brazen self-allocation of all 57 council chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions to the APC is not only shameless — it is unprecedented in Nigeria’s electoral history.”
The spokesperson claimed LASIEC officials arrived at some polling units with result sheets already completed before voting commenced.
He added that reports from LP agents across the state indicated that ballot boxes had been pre-stuffed with thumbprinted papers in many locations.

“While no one expects electoral decency from the APC, we had hoped they would at least pretend. Even that pretense is now gone,” Asogwa said.
The LP asked its supporters in Lagos to remain calm, saying the party would not be drawn into lawlessness despite the provocation.
“Lagos, known as the Centre of Excellence, should not be reduced to a theatre of electoral absurdity,” the statement added.
“What happens in Lagos reverberates across the country. Labour Party will not be silent.”
