Bernard Abuchi Udemezue
The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the national assembly has faulted the suspension of Bernard Abuchi Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum constituency in the Anambra state house of assembly.
Udemezue was suspended without pay during Tuesday’s plenary session for “unparliamentary conduct, inciting comments on social media, and abuse of legislative privileges”.
In a statement jointly signed by Tony Nwoye, senator representing Anambra north, and Afam Ogene, member of the house of representatives, the LP caucus said the suspension undermines democratic values.
“The Labour Party condemns in strong terms the ongoing persecution of one of our elected lawmakers who only exercised his constitutional duty of oversight,” the statement reads.

The LP lawmakers said they will resist “attempts to stifle accountability and muzzle the opposition”, insisting that the alleged diversion of LG funds should be investigated.
The lawmakers urged the Chukwuma Soludo-led government to address complaints of alleged marginalisation and neglect in Ayamelum.
“Depriving the people of Ayamelum local government area of representation in the state assembly due to this controversial suspension is unfair and undemocratic,” the statement reads.

They caucus asked the assembly leadership to revisit Udemezue’s suspension and give him a fair hearing, while also investigating the allegations he raised.
