The Lagos State Branch of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) has resolved to embark on an industrial action on Monday in protest of failure of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) management to implement the agreements that both parties recently reached.
President of the association, Dr Omojowolo Olubunmi, said that the association reached this resolution at an emergency general meeting held on May 28, 2014.
“We have found ourselves left with no other choice,” he told NAN.
Olubunmi said the doctors have a 12-point contention, which includes the increase in hospital charges, which he noted has led to increased number of avoidable deaths.
“Lack of basic facilities and equipment, chronic shortage of stationery, epileptic water supply, dirty environment and inadequate manpower have led to poor service delivery to Nigerians,” he said.
“Letters stipulating duration of residency training according to the August 2013 circular should be issued to both old and new residents individually immediately. The employment list of residents from the outstanding departments be released immediately.”
Earlier in April, the doctors staged a three-day warning strike, at the end of which it issued a 21-day ultimatum to the management of the hospital to implement its demands.
