Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF), has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi state.

Malami announced his ambition during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday.

The former AGF said he has the support of residents across the state.

“INEC guidelines do not allow us to begin any form of mobilisation yet, but I assure you that when the time comes, you will see that we have the support of the people of Kebbi state,” he said.

“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win because we have people who believe in us, and we will not let them down.”

Malami criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the ruling party had caused hardship, especially in the northern region.

He said many farmers have abandoned their farmlands because of insecurity.

The politician said the problem persists because of “negligence” at state and federal levels.

“Today, rice mills that operated actively for 20 years have shut down due to bad policies that favour foreign companies,” he said.

He added that his ambition is driven by a desire to “salvage Kebbi state from insecurity, restore and revive farming, and protect the interests of the people”.

He dismissed claims that his declaration was motivated by personal gain, insisting that his move is a rescue project.

Malami resigned from the APC in July and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He said the decision followed “wide consultations and deep personal reflection”, adding that he left the ruling party out of “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing”.
