Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho could do little as Manchester City lost 3-1 to Monaco to crash out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The second leg match was an intense affair but the French side emerged victorious at the Stade Louis II.
Iheanacho who came on in the 84th minute to replace Gael Clichy was unable to help City go through to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The match was Pep Guardiola’s 100th in European competitions. It was also the first time he’ll crash out in the round of 16 stage.
Three weeks ago, Guardiola’s side came from behind twice to win the first leg 5-3.
But a repeat was not to happen.
The French side was in complete control in the first half, scoring twice through Kylian Mbappe-Lottin and Henrique Fabinho.
City’s attacker, Leroy Sane, scored City’s only goal from close range after Danijel Subasic had saved Raheem Sterling’s effort in the 71st minute.
But Monaco was to have the last say.
Tiemoue Bakayoko rose high to direct a header into the bottom right corner of the goalpost in the 77th minute.
The match ended 6-6 on aggregate as Monaco triumphed by virtue of away goals.
