Manchester United defeated nine-man Southampton 9-0 in the English Premier League (EPL) game played at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to go joint top of the league.

The visitors had a player sent off in each half with the first in the second minute and United made them pay, scoring four times in the first and a further five in the second half.

Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edison Cavani, Anthony Martial (brace), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James were all on target as the Red Devils equaled their biggest win in the league.

Southampton were also on the receiving end of the previous record set last season at Leicester City.

In the thrilling encounter, Jan Bednarek scored a first-half own goal and got his marching orders late in the second half after conceding a penalty following his tackle on Martial.

After Alexandre Jankewitz was shown the first red card in the second minute for a horror tackle on McTominay, Wan-Bissaka got the attack versus defence show started by poking home at the far post from Luke Shaw’s cross.

Shaw also provided pin-pointed crosses for Rashford and Cavani’s goals as United continued to pad the goals difference statistic.

The second period was worse than the first with Martial, who has been on an eight-game goal drought, grabbing a goal.

The 88th-minute red card — and second for Southampton — led to a further three goals, including a stoppage-time header from substitute Daniel James to round up the massacre for United.

The defeat is only the third time a team has lost 9-0 in the EPL, and the second time in two years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side win takes them joint top of the league alongside Man City on 44 points from 22 matches having played two matches more than City.
