There was commotion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday when security operatives foiled an attempt to bomb a unit of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

A private security guard arrested a physically challenged man found loitering around the CENTREX unit of NAMA in a suspicious manner.

He was said to be making a call frantically after the device failed to go off.

After he was searched, improvised explosive devices were allegedly found on him.

The suspect was immediately handed over to the airport police command for investigation.

Mr. Yakubu Datti, general manager, corporate communications, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed the news but said there was no cause for alarm, as security agents were on top of the situation.

“A suspect with improvised explosive device was arrested about one kilometer away from the airport. He was handed over to the police immediately,” he told TheCable.

“There is no terrorism scare; there is no bomb scare. The police are investigating and there is no need to be afraid. As I speak to you now, normal activities are going on at the airport. The situation has been brought under control.”

Datti assured those who have business around the airport not to be afraid, as maximum security has been provided.

An officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who works at the airport, confirmed that security has been bolstered around both domestic and international terminals of the airport.
