A court in Mthatha province has imposed a fine of $817 or two-year jail term on Mandla Mandela, the oldest grandson of anti-apartheid activist and South African legend, Nelson Mandela, over assault.
Mandla, a legislator for the ruling African National Congress (ANC), was found to have attacked Mlamli Ngudle, a teacher, in a 2013 road rage incident in Mthatha.
The prosecutor said Ngudle had allegedly bumped a parked vehicle belonging to one of Mandela’s friends.
Some witnesses said Mandela threatened Ngudle with a gun.
The prosecutor said during the trial, the court in Mthatha confirmed that the legislator was arrogant and evasive while giving his testimony.
He said the legislator had been found guilty of assault in March.
Mandela made headlines in 2013 when a judge ordered him to return the remains of his father and two other children of Nelson Mandela to Qunu, their ancestral home.
Mandela had moved them to a memorial centre in another location without consulting the family.
