Many feared dead as 18-seater bus plunges into Ondo river
An interstate bus has plunged into the Owena river along Akure-Ondo road in Ondo state.
The accident took place on Sunday afternoon along Aponmo village near Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The driver reportedly lost control before the bus fell off the bridge.
According to an eyewitness, the driver was at top speed while it was raining, which made him lose control of the vehicle.
Ahmed Hassan, sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, confirmed the incident.
Hassan said seven of the passengers have been rescued and taken to the hospital.
He noted that there is still an ongoing rescue operation to save some passengers.
The FRSC sector commander added that the actual number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.
