Martial’s goal on debut secures United win against Liverpool
Anthony Martial scored on his debut to clinch a 3-1 victory for Manchester United over Liverpool in the star game of the week in the Barclays Premier League.
With Wayne Rooney injured, Louis van Gaal had an early opportunity to hand £36 million signing Anthony Martial his debut, but he resisted the temptation and opted to start Marouane Fellaini in attack.
But the 19-year-old would make his first appearance for the club replacing Juan Mata on 65 minutes.
United already led 1-0 before Ander Herrera extended their lead from the spot five minutes later, as the Frenchman struggled to get a foot-hold in the game.
But when Christian Benteke’s acrobatic effort halved the lead near the death, Martial sprung into life.
His run down the left flank opened up the Liverpool defence and his finish past Simon Mignolet sent the home crowd into ecstasy.
