John Obi Mikel, Super Eagles captain, has agreed on personal terms with Middlesbrough and is undergoing a medical at the club.
The Nigeria international held talks with Boro manager Tony Pulis at the Middlesbrough training ground last week and is now close to signing a short-term deal with the Championship club,” Sun UK reports.
Mikel’s two-year contract with a Chinese club, Tianjin TEDA, will soon end and he is set to return to the UK, where his wife and children reside.
The 31-year-old spent 11 years at Chelsea, winning a Champions League title, two Premier League titles, the Europa League, three FA Cups and the League Cup.
AS Roma, an Italian club, and Wolfsburg, a German side, has interest in the defensive midfielder.
Mikel will be part of a Tony Pulis side looking to bring Premier League football back to the Riverside next season.
Pulis believes Mikel can help propel Boro’s promotion push.
The last time he played for Nigeria was at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Although he has been encouraged to return to the national scene ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles coach, says only regular playing time at club level will guarantee him a place in the team.
