The defence headquarters says its troops have finally sent insurgents out of Mubi, the second largest town in Adamawa state.

Boko Haram seized Mubi on October 30, forcing many residents to flee.

The United Nation’s High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said an estimated 13,000 people fled the town to Cameroon because of the attack.

Though security forces later chased the militants out, some of them were reportedly operating in different parts of the town.

However, Chris Olukolade, a major-general and director of defence information, said Mubi has now been totally liberated.

“Troops operating in the north-east have completed the operation to clear Mubi of terrorists who have been operating in the town and environs,” he said in a statement.

“A mop up operation is ongoing to apprehend members of the group who might be lurking around after being dislodged during the coordinated air and land operations in the area.”

Olukolade pledged the readiness of the military to take control of all the communities that have been lost to Boko Haram.

More than 10 communities in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno are under the control of the sect.
