The military has ordered the closure of major markets in the north-eastern state of Yobe, residents told TheCable on Wednesday.

The affected markets which operate on a weekly basis are Geidam, Dapchi, Kukareta, Garin Alkali and Babbangida.

“These are the biggest markets in that axis of Yobe,” one of the sources told TheCable, adding that they don’t know why they were closed, but all they heard was that there was an order from above.

Another source, however, told TheCable that the military closed the markets on the allegation that the traders sell foodstuff to Boko Haram insurgents.

“They ordered the closure on Monday, saying those selling food in those markets are helping Boko Haram with food,” the source said.

When contacted, John Agim, defence spokesman, told TheCable he is not aware of such order.

Jude Chukwu, the army’s spokesman was not reachable for comments on the matter.

Boko Haram insurgents, in almost a decade, has continued to attack communities in Yobe and other parts of the north-east.

In February, the insurgents abducted some students of Government Girls Science Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe state.

All but one was released a month later while five died in captivity. Leah Sharibu, the only victim in custody, is  being held over her refusal to renounce her faith.
