Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state, has invoked the ‘no-work, no-pay’ policy, following the declaration of an indefinite strike by workers in the state.

Organised labour in the state had, on Tuesday, commenced an indefinite strike over non-implementation of full payment of the N30,000 national minimum wage, among other issues relating to promotion.

In a statement signed by Muhammed Aliyu, secretary to the state government (SSG), the governor also directed permanent secretaries to open attendance registers in all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to ensure effective implementation of the ‘no-work, no-pay’ policy.

The statement noted that the state government will challenge the strike action in court, and urged security agencies to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.

He, however, commended members of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for refusing to participate in the strike.

According to NAN, Yusuf Iya, chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa, and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart had directed workers in the state to commence an indefinite strike effective from June 15.

According to the directive on the strike, the workers are protesting the partial implementation of the new national minimum wage, lack of implementation of promotions since 2008, lack of training, non-confirmation of appointments of casual workers, among others.
