Miura, oldest footballer, sets new goal record in Japan
Kazuyoshi Miura, Yokohama FC striker, scored a screamer for his club side against FC Gifu in the J-League’s second division on Sunday.
Miura scored in the 22nd minute into the game but Yokohama FC lost to FC Gifu on 2-1.
The 49-year old, who goes into record as being the oldest footballer and oldest goal scorer in Japan’s professional league, is arguably Japan’s first superstar in football.
His rise to fame in Japan coincided with the launch of the J. League in 1993,
He played his last national team match in 2000, and finished with 55 goals in 89 matches.
Miura then became the first Japanese footballer to play in Italy, joining Genoa C.F.C in the 1994–95 Series A season.
He played for the Japanese national team and was the first Japanese recipient of the Asian Player of the year award in 1993.
