Mob burns Jonathan’s campaign vehicles in Niger

Two weeks after some youths in Plateau state set ablaze a bus (pictured) belonging to the Goodluck Jonathan campaign organisation, a mob in Suleja, Niger state, on Sunday burnt two more campaign vehicles of the president.

The incident happened on the same day when John Kerry, the United States secretary of states, visited Nigeria to meet with Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, the main contenders of next month’s general election.

Kerry had told both leaders to accept the outcome of the election in good fate and also urge their supporters to shun violence.

However, the pre-election violence that has been recorded so far has raised security concerns about the poll.

Already, a number of ex militants in the Niger Delta have threatened to avenge attacks on Jonathan’s convoy in the north.

Apart from the torching of his campaign vehicles, the president has been attacked in Katsina, Kano and Bauchi, where six operatives of the department of state services sustained serious injuries and some persons were also killed.

With less than three weeks to the election, Nigerians are wishing that the presidential candidates would keep to the terms of the peace accord that they consented to.
