Mohammed Idris: Nigeria becoming a respected nation again under Tinubu

Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation

Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, says Nigeria is regaining international respect under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Idris spoke during an interview with Forbes Africa to mark Democracy Day.

The minister said Tinubu’s economic reforms are repositioning the country for long-term growth and global relevance.

He said key reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and unification of the foreign exchange rates, were bold and necessary steps to rescue the economy.

“These were difficult decisions that had to be made,” Idris said.

“They caused some turbulence, but like an aircraft taking off, we are now reaching stability.”

He described the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s return to civil rule as a time for both celebration and sober reflection on the country’s democratic and economic journey.

The minister noted that savings from subsidy removal are being channelled into critical infrastructure, including two expansive highway corridors covering more than 1,700 kilometres.

“The aim is not just connectivity, but economic opportunity,” he said.

He added that Nigeria’s global image is being restored under Tinubu’s leadership.

“Nigeria is really retracing its steps,” he said.

“It is becoming an important nation once again among the comity of nations.

“The respect that Nigeria used to have is now gradually returning. Investors have more confidence in our country.”

Idris said the reforms under the renewed hope agenda go beyond economic indicators, adding that they are intended  to build a foundation for inclusive growth and accountability.

“The reforms are not just about economic arithmetic,” he said.
