Gabriel Adaji, the Adamawa state commissioner of police, has dismissed media reports on Thursday that insurgents seized Mubi, the second largest town in the state, triggering an exodus of inhabitants

Addressing reporters in Yola, capital of the state capital on Friday, Adaji said Mubi was safe, branding news that insurgents overran the town as the handiwork of rumour peddlers.

He said the police would not tolerate deliberate plot to create panic in Adamawa, and also warned the residents not to promote fear through their utterances.

“The situation in Mubi town is generally calm; members of the public are strongly advised to stop spreading rumour and causing panic movement, as this will only worsen the situation,” Adaji said.

Commending security agencies for assisting the police in the state, Adaji said everything humanly possible would be done to restore normalcy to Mubi and other troubled areas in the state.

Adaji urged members of the public not to relent in providing useful information to security agencies, as that such step would go a long way in improving security situation in Adamawa.

Following attacks by the sect, hundreds of residents deserted the town on Thursday.

Weeks earlier, reports indicated that Boko Haram was targeting Mubi, the home town of Alex Badeh, a general and Nigeria’s chief of defence staff.
