Napoli football club’s stadium has been officially renamed after late Diego Maradona, the club’s legend, who died last month.

The diminutive Argentina football icon died from cardiac arrest on November 25 at the age of 60.

The stadium, previously called Studio San Paolo, was changed to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium as a tribute to the late football icon.

The Naples-based side announced the change of name in a statement on Friday evening after the city’s council approved the resolution.

“SSC Napoli is delighted about today’s decision by the Naples City Council to rename the Stadio San Paolo in memory of Diego Armando Maradona,” the statement read.

Fans of the club also had the chance to pay tribute to Maradona during their recent Europa League match at home against Rijeka while the players wore jerseys with “Maradona 10” before the clash.

Maradona spent seven years at Napoli, where he made 188 appearances, scored 81 goals and won the club’s only two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.
