President Bola Tinubu is billed to meet with opposition national assembly lawmakers-elect on Monday.

The planned meeting, which is coming about a week before the inauguration of the 10th national assembly, has been scheduled for the state house.

According to the invitation letter signed by Tijanni Umar, permanent secretary in the state house, the president would meet the senators-elect at 3:00 pm while his meeting with the house of representatives-elect would be at 5:00 pm.

Umar asked the soon-to-be lawmakers to submit their names for security clearance.

It is not clear what the meeting is about, but it is not unconnected to the process that will produce presiding officers of the incoming national assembly.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has since nominated Godswill Akpabio, minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Barau Jibrin, senator representing Kano north, as the senate president and deputy.

In the lower legislative chamber, the ruling party nominated Tajudeen Abbas, lawmaker from Kaduna, and Benjamin Kalu, lawmaker from Imo, as speaker and deputy.

The party’s stance has not settled well with some APC members who are nursing ambitions to become presiding officers.

For instance, the likes of Orji Uzor Kalu, chief whip of the senate, and Abdulaziz Yari, senator-elect from Zamfara, have insisted on running for the office of senate president.
