The forward operating base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy in Akwa Ibom says it has impounded a boat with 4,320 ampoules of synthetic opioids and arrested three suspected drug dealers.

NAN reports that Uche Aneke, the commanding officer of the base, spoke in Ibaka on Thursday while handing over the suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Aneke said reliable intelligence from a member of the public led to the tracking and arrest of the suspects on Tuesday.

He noted that the suspects were apprehended on a fibre boat conveying about 4,320 ampoules of Pethidine 100mg/2ml injection solution, a controlled synthetic opioid substance with high addiction potential from Cameroon.

Aneke added that the suspects intended to deliver the smuggled drugs to a receiver in Nigeria.

“The intended receiver is located in Nigeria. So they wanted to smuggle the substances from Cameroon to Nigeria,” he said.

The commanding officer said the navy will continue to prevent crime on the waterways with advanced technology.

Emmanuel Okon, the chief superintendent of narcotics, NDLEA command in Akwa Ibom, noted that the crime would be investigated while receiving the suspects.
