The Nigerian Navy says its operatives have seized 13 sacks of cannabis sativa and arrested a suspect during raids in Badagry LGA of Lagos

According to NAN, the forward operating base of the navy in Badagry carried out the raids on August 24 and 27 at different locations in the area.

Adams Aliu, the base commander, said operatives acted on intelligence gathered about a hideout in the Ashipa community, at the Seme border.

He said the officers “discovered a particular building where cannabis sativa was being brought in from Benin Republic and then distributed”.

He added that four sacks of the banned substance were recovered from the building.

The commander added that the navy also arrested a suspect, who confessed to having ventured into carrying hard drugs to feed his family.

The operatives also intercepted nine sacks of the substance from smugglers at a hideout near Akoro Beach, on the Seme border.

“On sighting us, they fled, but we were able to recover the cannabis sativa,” the commander said.

“The hard drugs were smuggled into the country from Benin Republic. No suspect was arrested because they ran away.”

Adams said that the total value of items seized was N5.5 million.

He added that the exhibits and the suspect have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation.
