Navy won’t cover up trigger-happy officer
The Nigerian Navy has pledged to prosecute any of its personnel involved in acts capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the service.
Lt. Way Olabisi, spokesman of the Western Naval Command, made this known in Lagos on April 25, 2014.
Olabisi stated that the command is presently carrying out an investigation to confirm if truly it was one of its personnel who allegedly shot Mr. Lekan Samuel, a tanker driver at Ibafo/Trinity area of Apapa, on Friday, April 25, 2014.
“So far, it has not been authenticated that the suspect is a naval personnel, thus, any member of the public with useful information and identity of the suspect should contact naval authorities,” Olabisi said.
“The Nigerian Navy is therefore appealing to members of the public to exercise restraint and wait for the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”
He stressed that the Navy has a reputation for prosecuting offenders, and that the case will not be an exception if the suspect is found to be one of its officers.
There was traffic gridlock at Liverpool-Trinity Road in Apapa on Friday, as tanker drivers claiming to be protesting the death of one of their members burnt tyres and blocked the entire road.
It took the intervention of the Police to restore normalcy in the area.
