The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says Lagos, Benue and Ebonyi states paid highest for premium motor spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, at an average price of N181.49 in May 2021.

The NBS disclosed this in a report, titled: ‘Premium motor spirit (petrol) price watch (May 2021)’, released on Thursday.

According to the report, the total average petrol price paid by consumers increased by 29.61 percent year-on-year and month-on-month by 1.01 percent to N168.06 in May 2021 from N166.38 in April 2021.

“States with the highest average price of premium motor spirit (petrol) were Lagos (N186.26), Benue (N180.83) and Ebonyi (N177.40),” the report reads.

“States with the lowest average price of premium motor spirit (petrol) were Gombe (N161.33), Borno (N162.27) and Zamfara (N162.31).”

The report further showed that across zones, average petrol price was highest in the south-east with N172.46, followed by north-central (N170.47) and south-south (N169.59].

Meanwhile, north-east, north-west and south-west recorded the lowest average petrol price with N162.78, N164.63 and N169.36 respectively.

NBS report on liquified petroleum gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, showed that the average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder increased by 0.12 percent month-on-month to N2,071.69 in May 2021 from N2,069.21 in April 2021.

However, the average price for refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder slightly decreased by 0.66 percent month-on-month to N4,288.95 in May 2021 from N4,317.55 in April 2021.

In another report, the bureau said the average price for automotive gas oil (diesel) paid by consumers both increased year-on-year (8.99 percent) and month-on-month (0.69 percent) to N238.82 in May 2021 from N237.19 in April 2021.

“States with the highest average price of diesel were Sokoto (N259.29), Bauchi (N258.00) and Benue (N256.17). States with the lowest average price of diesel were Nasarawa (N213.89), Delta (N215.52) and Rivers (N223.24).”

The national household kerosene report for May showed that the average price per litre paid by consumers increased by 0.23 percent month-on-month to N363.50 from N362.68 in the previous month.

Similarly, the average price per gallon paid by consumers for kerosene increased by 3.34 percent month-on-month to N1,266.99 in May 2021 from N1,226.08 in April 2021.
