NBS: Lagos, Ogun, Kano lead states’ contribution to N22trn telecoms sector GDP in 2023

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says Nigeria’s telecommunications sector’s total revenue contribution to nominal gross domestic product (GDP) across all states was N22.68 trillion.

According to the GDP on telecommunications by state dataset, the top 10 states accounted for about N11.35 trillion or 50 percent of the sector in 2023.

The states includes Lagos, Kano, Rivers, Oyo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, FCT Abuja, Ondo, Ogun, and Edo

A breakdown of the record showed that Lagos maintained its dominance with N2.74 trillion, nearly three times higher than Ogun, the second-biggest contributor with N1.33 trillion.

The NBS said Kano followed with N1.26 trillion, while Oyo ranked fourth with N1.17 trillion.

Also, Kaduna secured the fifth spot at N1.01 trillion, edging the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja which accounted for N824.2 billion, followed by Niger state with N814.8 billion.

Others are Rivers (N803.6 billion), Adamawa  (N754.4 billion) and Katsina (N621.9 billion).

The figures highlight how telecommunications is a critical driver of state-level economic activity, with Lagos alone contributing more than 22 percent of the national telecoms output.

At the other end of the table, NBS data showed that Ekiti (N148.84 billion), Ebonyi (N157.93 billion), Yobe (N168.36 billion), Kebbi (N170.66 billion), and Taraba (N174.06 billion) made up the bottom five, jointly accounting for less than 4 percent of total earnings.
