The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the mining and quarrying sector grew by 4.61 percent in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025.
The NBS examined the sector’s performance in its ‘Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report Q2 2025’ released on Monday.
The mining sector covers crude petroleum, natural gas, coal mining, metal ores, quarrying, and other minerals.
“This sector grew nominally by 4.61% (year-on-year) in Q2 2025. Quarrying and Other Minerals activity exhibited the highest growth rate of all the sub-activities at 50.41%, followed by Coal Mining activity at 32.59%,” the bureau said.

“Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas was the main contributor to the sector with a weight of 93.90% in Q2 2025.
“Comparing Q2 2025’s rate of growth relative to Q2 2024 and Q1 2025 growth rates, there was an increase of 14.55% points and an increase of 9.94% points respectively.
“The Mining & Quarrying sector contributed 2.98% to the overall GDP in the second quarter of 2025, lower than the contributions recorded in 2024 second quarter at 3.40% and lower than the previous quarter at 4.38%.

“In real terms, the Mining and Quarrying sector grew by 20.86% (year-on-year) in the second quarter of 2025.
“Compared to the same quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, it was higher by 13.35% points and higher by 17.89% points respectively. Quarter-on-quarter, the growth rate recorded was 3.92% during the quarter.
“The contribution of Mining and Quarrying to Real GDP in the quarter under review stood at 4.23%, higher than the rate of 3.64% recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2024 and higher than the 4.22% recorded in the first quarter of 2025.”
‘AGRICULTURE CONTRIBUTED 21% TO NOMINAL GDP IN Q2 2025’

Crop production, livestock, forestry, and fishing are the four subactivities that make up the agricultural sector, according to the NBS.
The bureau said the sector grew by 1.84 percent (Y-o-Y) in nominal terms in Q2 2025, showing a decrease of 9.71 percentage points from the same quarter of 2024.
“Looking at the preceding quarter’s growth rate of 10.04%, there was a decrease of 8.20% points,” the NBS said.
“Crop production remained the major driver of the sector. This is evident as it accounts for 57.06% of the overall nominal value of the sector in the second quarter of 2025.

“Quarter-on-quarter growth stood at 16.13% in the second quarter of 2025. Agriculture contributed 21.04% to nominal GDP in the second quarter of 2025.
“This figure was lower than the rate recorded in the second quarter of 2024 and higher than the first quarter of 2025, which recorded 24.63% and 19.40% respectively.

“The agricultural sector in the second quarter of 2025 grew by 2.82% (year-on-year) in real terms, an increase of 0.22% points from the corresponding period of 2024, and an increase of 2.75% points from the preceding quarter which recorded a growth rate of 0.07%. It grew on a quarter-on-quarter basis at 16.40%.
“However, the sector contributed 26.17% to aggregate GDP in real terms in Q2 2025, lower than the contribution in the second quarter of 2024 and higher than the first quarter of 2025 which stood at 26.53% and 23.33% respectively.”

The NBS, in its Q2 2025 GDP report, said Nigeria’s GDP rate grew by 4.23 percent in Q2 2025.
The bureau also said the transportation and storage sector grew by 13.67 percent in nominal terms.

The figures come more than two months after Nigeria rebased its GDP.
